Understanding the Effects of Prolonged Sitting on Your Body

Why Do I Feel “Locked Up” After Sitting Too Long?

By Dr. Andrew Kakishita, DC | Lehi, UT

That “locked up” feeling after sitting is usually your body reacting to staying in one position too long and NOT a sign of damage or something being “out of place.”

The Inevitable

If you sit for a while and then stand up feeling stiff, tight, or “stuck,” you’re not alone. This is one of the most common complaints for people with desk jobs or long commutes.

The good news is that this feeling is usually not an injury.

Your body adapts quickly to whatever position you keep it in. When you sit for extended periods, certain muscles get comfortable tightening up while others aren’t doing much at all. When you finally stand up, everything has to readjust, and that’s where the stiffness comes from.

It’s less about posture being “bad” and more about not moving enough.

In fact, this is also why trying to sit perfectly straight all day doesn’t actually solve the problem. No single posture is ideal if you stay in it too long.

What helps more:

  • Changing positions regularly
  • Taking short movement breaks (even 1–2 minutes)
  • Doing simple resets like walking or light mobility work

If you consistently feel locked up, your body may just need more exposure to movement. Stretching at the end of the day may help but typically doesn’t facilitate long-term relief.

FAQs:

Is my posture the problem?

Not entirely. Lack of movement is usually the bigger issue.

Should I get a standing desk?

It can help, but only if you still move regularly.

Is this a sign of a bigger issue?

Usually not, unless it becomes painful or persistent.
