Understanding Shoulder Clicking and Popping During Workouts

Why Does My Shoulder Click or Pop During Workout?

By Dr. Andrew Kakishita, DC | Lehi, UT

Shoulder clicking or popping during workouts is usually caused by movement inefficiency and not damage, especially if it isn’t painful.

So, My Shoulder Pops…

Hearing or feeling your shoulder click during lifts can be unsettling. Most people immediately think something is wrong.

In reality, clicking without pain is very common and usually not a sign of injury.

Shoulder Coordination

The shoulder is a complex joint that relies heavily on coordination, especially from the shoulder blade. If that coordination is slightly off, you can get small shifts in how structures move. That’s what creates the clicking sensation.

More so than if there is or isn’t pain, the real question should be “Is there pain, weakness, or loss of function?”

If there’s no pain, it’s usually safe to keep training. But it’s still worth improving how your shoulder moves.

A few things that help:

  • Strengthening the muscles that control the shoulder blade
  • Improving overhead mechanics
  • Gradually loading through full ranges of motion

Where people go wrong is either ignoring it completely or overcorrecting with random band exercises they saw online.

The goal is to move better and stay pain-free.
