How Long Should You Actually Wait Before Seeing Someone After a Car Accident?

By Dr. Andrew Kakishita, DC | Pleasant Grove, UT Chiropractor

The answer is shorter than most people think, and it is not “whenever it starts hurting.”

The Short Answer

Ideally, get checked out within a few days after any car accident, even a minor one, even if you feel completely fine. But do not assume you are out of the woods just because a week or two has passed symptom free either.

Why Feeling Fine Right Away Does Not Tell the Whole Story

When you are in an accident, your body floods with adrenaline and other stress hormones that block pain signals in the moment. That explains why some people hurt within the first day or two. But that is not the only pattern we see.

The Part Most People Do Not Know About

After an accident, your muscles and nervous system often go into a protective mode. Muscles around the impact area tighten up and stay on guard, sometimes without you even noticing. That area can also become more sensitive to input than it was before. This protective guarding can sit quietly in the background for days or even weeks. Then, during a completely normal daily activity, like reaching into the back seat, sleeping wrong, or picking up a laundry basket, that already-tight, on-guard tissue gets pushed past its limit and a flare-up shows up. This is a big reason people end up blaming “sleeping wrong” for pain that actually traces back to an accident from weeks earlier.

Why Getting Checked Early Still Matters

Getting evaluated soon after your accident does two things. It gives us a baseline for how your body is moving and where it might already be guarding, before things tighten up further. It also documents your injury early, which matters if you need that information later for insurance purposes.

The Bottom Line

Do not use “I feel fine” as proof you are in the clear, whether that is two days or two months after your accident. If something starts acting up later on, even if it seems unrelated, it is worth mentioning the accident when you come in.

If you were recently in an accident anywhere around Pleasant Grove, come in and get evaluated. We will help you understand what is going on, whether it shows up right away or later down the road.
